In a post on the mysql blog Kaj Arno, VP of Community at MySql AB announced that following a series of meetings here in Orlando, they have been acquired by Sun.
There’s next to no substance in the post as to Sun’s futures plans, the amount of cash involved or where on earth this deal came from, but Kaj did say that they sang a song (seriously) to Sun’s senior staff, one of whom commented “We take this very seriously”. Take that as you will (Kaj think’s it’s a good sign).
Deals like this can go one of two ways. Sun has embraced the open source community of late, so while there’s a risk that they could take MySql and make it a proprietary monster to compete with Oracle and SQL Server, I really don’t think that’s going to happen. More likely though Sun are going to start adding in the features that so many have come to love from the big enterprise database producers and that can only be a good thing for MySql users everywhere.
I heard 1 billion. wow!!

Looking at MySQL contributor agreement I can’t help but thinking FOSS contributors are considered pretty poorly by the industry. Keep in mind, MySQL has been bought by SUN for a whooping $1B. So assuming that some 1,000 guys contributed to
